Buying a Bedroom Mattress
Buy a bedmattress as an investment in proper sleeping. Learn more about different types of mattresses and the pros and cons of each to make a smart decision.
The mattress should be air-ventilated or you’ll lose moisture and develop mildew and foundations like slats or box springs, for instance, will blow more air than plywood.
Comfort
Your bed should be your haven, where you get a good night’s sleep. But if your mattress is not comfortable, that can avoid that and cause you pain, irritability and exhaustion – and more problems with your sleep and quality of life.
The firmness and suppleness will also vary by the mattress; if you’re a stomach and back sleeper, firm mattresses will align your spine; if you’re a side sleeper, you may prefer something softer which can relieve pressure points better; if you’re a combination sleeper, choose medium-firm mattresses which will support you in every sleeping position.
Other comfort factors are cooling material and bounce you prefer. There are multiple layers of different foams in the foam mattress for body contouring and a lower thermoregulation value than innerspring or hybrid mattresses. The comfort can be further increased with mattress topper or higher sheets.
Durability
Whether a mattress is long-lasting or not is heavily based on the materials used for its manufacturing; high-density polyfoam mattresses can last much longer, while those made of low-density foam wear out much faster.
There are also the coil gauge and number that affect how firm or durable a mattress is going to be, wherein higher coil counts create firmer surfaces and lower gauge coils create softer ones. Type of construction can be also important for durability – pocketed coils are targeted in support instead of traditional.
Purple’s earliest mattress has two inches of hyper-elastic polymer GelFlex Grid padding encased in its cooling, moisture-wicking cover. This squat grid gives it a particular touch. There is also Soft and Firm in it and it is compatible with both slats and box springs.
Warranty
There are warranties available for most mattresses but it is difficult to figure out exactly what those are. Knowing what a void warranty is will allow you to make an educated decision and secure your purchase.
Mattress warranties will generally exclude defects in the construction such as early creasing or stretching but this is difficult to prove as a defect. Pro Tip: Try to select a mattress retailer who also offers home delivery as this can come in handy when choosing the product that is right for you.
When you are in contact with a manufacturer about warranty issues, be as detailed as possible and include pictures whenever possible. You will find full warranty terms from a lot of manufacturers online so make sure to check this before you buy. Finally, remember that warranties are only valid for original owners – if you change ownership, warranties will not be valid, selling it off or giving it away will.
Size
Size should also be considered when choosing the best mattress for you. A big mattress will make your body move and you will have less space for other furniture in your bedroom; a small mattress will not feel right.
If you have a small room, go for Single or Double mattress for the most space. These mattresses have shallower shapes that are simple to get around which is great for kids rooms or rooms with limited space. Moreover, these sizes take fewer sheets than the others.
Queen and King mattress size are comfortable for two people in the same room; they are wider and longer than Twin and Double mattress and so offer freedom and comfort. There may be layers of memory foam in Queen/King mattresses that hold and conform to the body for a warm and soft feel, and latex layers with more of a springy feeling.
